for County Council Governmental Operations and External Affairs Committee
Aloha council reps,
I have a lot of questions and concerns related to this resolution, particularly related to the underlying
motives of the new federal regime for rounding up illegal or potentially illegal residents.
Without immigrants, the fresh food we depend upon for sustenance and health would be more
expensive or gone.
Without immigrants, your old tutu might lose her loyal caregiver.
Without immigrants, rich people in Hawaii who live behind fancy gates in big bucks subdivisions
would have lawns as high as their window sills. Their windows, in fact, would be dirty so the grass
growing and dead, unkempt yard would be less visible. And who would do the washing and cook their
food? And who'd they be complaining to (even if they voted for a Republican regime that promised to
do the damage they are now doing)?
Without immigrants, my life would be less rich and my friends fewer. In fact, my husband is an
immigrant (now a citizen). If he'd come to Hawaii 35 years later, I may not have the man of my
dreams, and West Hawaii wouldn't have one of its best irrigation technicians. Just sayin'....
There seem to be numerous specific concerns about the MOUS by other members of the public.
However, it's not clear if any of them have been addressed.
I'm also concerned that the ACLU and The Legal Clinic also have deep concerns — both respectable
and responsible organizations who do due diligence in matters of human rights and immigration.
Those concerns are related to the ability (and mandate) of police to be involved in immigration control
(which I do not believe they should be unless there are crimes other than illegal immigration
involved). Racial profiling is a real and occurring danger — a practice that can be conscious or
unconscious but always demeaning and dehumanizing.
In fact, I can't see any reason why we would pass Reso 74-25 or support its intentions. It's straight
from the Trump et al playbook —something we should be pushing back on and leading ourselves
away from at every available chance.
That's why I'm asking you to vote "NO" on this resolution.
