Aloha Council,
I Strongly Support the resolution to begin negotiations to purchase the'bina of Kawainui Makai
(TMK 2-7-11:01 & 2-7-10:27) in perpetuity by the County through the PONC process.
I am the District 1 Commissioner for the Game Management Advisory Commission. I am a
member ofMakahanoioa Fishing. I am a[so an outdoor writer member of Outdoor Writers of America
Association Senior Active and tong time contributor tOHawaii Fishing N8VVS.
Historically, Pepeekeo was a train stop where folks from the country would come to Hilo to shop
and then get off the train tOcamp and fish. Private land ownership has hindered cultural practices like
camping and fishing.
The Kawainui Makai purchase is important for not only Hamakua but as a temptate of how private
public partnerships can help preserve land and provide recreation and access to food resources on land
and sea.
County Council please approve this resolution to enter negotiations to purchase lower Kawainui
as a unique and beautiful muliwai-estuary with strong community involvement.
