Pacific Tsunami Museum
Testimony for Resolution 99-25
Testimony #3: Mike Weiss
Docent, Retired Teacher
My name is Mike Weiss. I am a docent at the Pacific Tsunami Museum.
have done tsunami presentations both here and on the mainland for
over 8 years to local, national and international guests.
I talk story, telling people about the history of Hilo and how tsunamis
have affected that history. I talk about the science behind tsunamis and
what to do if a tsunami is coming. I highlight our amazing displays and
interactive stations, tailoring my approach to fit the clients.
I have been lucky to have met and listened to so many tsunami
survivors and their families over the last eight years. Learning their
stories humbles me. Many of these strong, vibrant individuals and their
families continue to reside here and conduct businesses here, serving
Hawaii and inspiring us with their strength, courage, vision and tenacity.
If the only reason for our museum to exist is to preserve these stories of
the victims and survivors of past disasters, it is invaluable. We are
expanding our focus to include earthquakes, land slides, fire and
hurricanes. Our dedicated staff and volunteers are able to integrate
findings quickly and efficiently, ensuring accuracy and protecting our
Ohana, visitors and history for the future.
