Summary for County Council
Crime Stoppers Hilo, Inc. is a non-profit organization founded in 1981.
In a nutshell, it promotes the welfare of Hawaii and lessen the burdens of
federal, state and county government by assisting their respective law
enforcement agencies in the apprehension and conviction of criminals.
Specifically, it provides an avenue for anonymous informants to come
forward with information
and receive a reward for their knowledge. Crimes like the airport double
murder that might not have been solved if it were not for an anonymous tip.
The funding for the rewards come from public contributions.
In 1999, in East Hawaii, there were 3 search warrants executed by the police
department which resulted in 200 plants being confiscated and 6 arrests
made. Thus far this year, 1 search warrant has been executed with 77 plants
confiscated worth $70,000. We paid a total of $500 in rewards as a result in
marijuane since 1999.
Our Board of Directors is a very diverse group. Consisting of 17 members.
7 Women, 10 Men with ages that range from late 20's to mid 60's. We
have a stock broker, high school teacher, attorney, accountant, newspaper
editor, newspaper reporter, assistant Liberian, housewife, retail automobile
executive, several entrepeuners, a business manager, a business
administrative assistant, a bank manger and myself, a trust officer.
The point is that our Board of Directors unanimously support of the
acceptance of the $250,000 grant for eradication of marijuana. specially for
the demand reduction portion allocated for education and prevention.
