Testimony in OPPOSITION of Resolution 74 - 25: ICE MOU.

Aloha Council Members and Mayor,
My name is Molly Johnston and I am writing in strong opposition
to Resolution 74 - 25: ICE MOU because it will negatively impact
our Hawaii community. I am a long time hospitality professional,
event planner and mother living in Kona.
The involvement of ICE working the police is an overreach of
federal authority into state and local matters. Their involvement
will only continue to divide law enforcement and the community
by taking away so many layers of trust and respect.
People will not want to interact with police in any way knowing
that they have their work so connected with the federal
government that continues to prove its lack of regard for
humanity.
Our island families deserve better and it's heartbreaking seeing
the trauma and fear in our community.
I cannot imagine how our economy would survive with taking out
so many people who perform the most thankless and essential
jobs that most people would never even consider.
Allowing the Hawaii Police Department to engage in immigration
enforcement undermines public safety. This resolution does not
protect our community; instead, it fosters division and distrust. I
strongly urge the committee to oppose Resolution 74-25 and
protect the integrity of our local law enforcement.
