To Whom It May Concern,
We, the students of Driver Safety Student Council of Hawaii Community Service at HAAS are
honored to share our experiences from the recent Traffic Safety Fair and express our deepest
gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such an impactful event. As students in grades 9-12,
we were able to actively contribute to an initiative that promotes safer roads and communities,
and it was an experience we will never forget.
A total of 24 students stepped forward to help with the event, with 10 of us involved in the full
planning and execution process. From brainstorming the event layout to organizing booths and
engaging with attendees, we gained invaluable leadership, teamwork, and event management
skills. The rest of our team played a crucial role in providing relief at the booths, ensuring that all
activities ran smoothly throughout the day.
The event was well attended, with approximately 200 community members engaging with the
various safety education booths. Our Drivers Ed informational station provided essential
knowledge about road safety, while the two traffic quiz booths tested and reinforced attendees'
understanding of traffic laws. Our Keiki Corner was a major highlight, offering interactive
activities to educate younger children about pedestrian safety, while the tricycle cone course
provided a fun and engaging way to teach the importance of careful maneuvering. Another key
attraction was the Drunk Buster Cup booth, where participants learned about the dangers of
impaired driving in an eye-opening and interactive way.
Beyond the activities, the event attracted the support of over 70 professionals from organizations
dedicated to community safety and health. We were especially honored by the presence of our
mayor, who was not only impressed by the event's impact but also eager to collaborate on future
safety initiatives. Additionally, a surprise visit from a DOE Driver's Education supervisor
reinforced the importance of our work, as they commended our efforts and recognized the event
as a model for engaging safety education.
This experience has empowered us as young leaders and advocates for traffic safety. We saw
firsthand how education and hands-on activities can make a real difference in fostering a culture
of awareness and responsibility. The connections we made with organizations such as Mothers
Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have further motivated us to continue our mission. We are
excited about the opportunity to extend our efforts into the next school year, teaching not only
pedestrian safety to young children but also addressing the dangers of impaired driving among
teens and adults.
The Traffic Safety Fair was not just an event —it was a movement, and we are proud to have
been a part of it. With continued support, we know we can expand our reach and save lives
through education and community engagement.
