I've lived in Kona for over twenty years and have observed the population of strays explode since the Humane Society no longer offered frequent and affordable spay and neutering for cats and dogs. Also lacking in our communities is adequate and effective outreach of education about the importance of spay/ neutering of pets and strays, and relaying how to contact the various resources for assistance with their pets and/or strays. Very few individuals can afford the ever increasing costs for a private The average cost for a private Veterinarian fee of upwards of $400 not including mandatory $80 exam. The wait times are also excessive and can be 3-4 months. Also our island is a tourist destination. Nobody wants to see sickly, starving, homeless cats begging for food and care while trying to enjoy their vacations. I hope our island will follow the examples of countries such as Greece and Japan. Individuals, businesses, non -profits, and volunteers all work together to keep their strays and pets healthy and the populations under control. These programs need your support. Sincerely, Darcy May Kailua-Kona, HI Sent from my iPhone
