My name is Leandra Rouse, and I am the curator of The Kona Beekeeping Legacy Project. Born and raised
in Kona by beekeepers, I have dedicated the last nine months to bringing this project to life. I see it as my
kuleana to develop projects that support my community and preserve the stories that shape our island's

identity.

IsLand. The story of beekeeping in Kona is one of adaptation, innovation, and survival. By documenting
these experiences, we ensure that the knowledge and wisdom of past generations continue to inform
and inspire the future.

essential tolocal farmers and ranchers, aapollinators pba/o key role in maintaining productive crops.
This initiative strengthens the relationship between farmers and ranchers, reinforcing a spirit of kokua—
mutual support and shared responsibiLity for the Land.
Investing in education is another key component of this work. Through hands-on field trips, we introduce
Big Island students to beekeeping, helpingthern develop confidence around bees and explore
beekeeping aaapotential. vocation. These experiences create opportunities forjobdevelopment while
strengthening local food systems.
