Subject: 2nd road out of Waikoloa Village
Aloha Hawaii County Council Members, -
I have been a resident of Waikoloa Village since 2011. 1 live on Haena St., and our house is the last house on that road. A
dirt road runs in back of our house all the way to Kawaihae Road. It is basically a wilderness of Kiawe trees and goats and
pigs.
When we had the big WV fire here, we had to vacate our house. We could smell smoke and the sky in back of our house
was orange! We only hoped we would see our house again when we returned in 2 days.
We evacuated without a lot of traffic on Waikoloa Road, but once we traveled north, and passed Hulu on Queen
Ka'ahumanu Hwy., we saw cars waiting to get out. The line was extremely long. No one was moving.
Cars were rushing north and south on the Hwy., which left those trying to exit Hulu, totally stopped. They could NOT exit.
This would have been the same situation in the future fire of Maui! People unable to exit using one "exit route"!
We've had more houses built in Waikoloa these last years. In the last years, 30 houses have been builtjust in our area
alone.
The ONE road to exit is NOT enough!
In 2008, the County's own plan for another road was called a "high priority". What happened to those plans?
We need the 2.5 million dollars for the engineering road to start, NOW!
I urge you to include the engineering funds needed to begin a secondary road.
Council members, don't allow Waikoloa Village to be another tragedy in the making, due to the States negligence.
Funds must be included in the 2025 Capital budget right away.
Our homeowners cannot be ignored. To safely exist, we need the second road.
