RE: Support for Resolution 125-20 and Upolu Point
Dear Honorable Members of the Committee on Legislative Approvals and Acquisitions,
Kohala Lihikai stands in strong support of Resolution 120-25 to the purchase of Upolu Point,
NorthKohu|a. We were founded by six North Kohala community groups and nonprofits coming
together to protect and steward the coastal and open spaces of North Kohala.
Since 2O1U.the community since has participated inthe preservation of eight parcels ofland on
the leeward coast and five significant parcels related toKanoehanneha onthe north coast. This
parcel connects the continuous historical and cultural lands named for protection in the North
P{oha|aConmmunitv Development Plan /(]ndinanoe0R-151\. The site atUpo|u links Hawaii to
the rest of the Pacific by its name, placement on the north tip and traditional Polynesian
practices.
The goal articulated bvthe community for this land isko perpetuate this area's
regional and international significance as a community -supported place of ocean learning that is
a "lihikai", a link between the land and sea. The long-term vision for this coast is a contiguous
historical corridor that tells the story of Kohala and engages locals and visitors in respectful
educational, research, environmental, recreational, and cultural activities that also support
resource -related jobs and local businesses.
