RE: Support for Resolution 120 25 — Authorizing Department of Finance to Purchase 2024
Prioritized Properties
April 10, 2025
Dear Honorable Members of the Committee on Legislative Approvals and Acquisitions,
Moku 0 Keawe Land Conservancy (MOKU) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and land trust
dedicated to protecting the natural heritage of Hawaii Island, including important agricultural
lands and areas of unique ecological value.
We support and urge you to pass Resolution 120 25 that authorizes the Director of Finance to
enter into negotiations for the acquisitions of lands and/or conservation easements for all or a
portion of any property identified in the Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources
Preservation Commission's (PONC) 2024 Prioritized List, utilizing the PONC Preservation Fund
Working with community members, MOKU nominated two properties on the list, the Nani Kai
Hoku Farm Agricultural Easement and the Joseph Rock Arboretum Conservation Easement. The
Nani Kai Hoku Farm agricultural easement furthers important local, county, and state priorities
regarding food security and environmental protection, while the Joseph Rock Arboretum
conservation easement helps to restore and protect dryland native forest species, providing
numerous educational opportunities.
Importantly, 85% of the funds for the Nani Kai Hoku Farm Agricultural Easement have been
secured. These matching funds are from the State Legacy Lands Commission and the U.S.
Department of Agriculture and will efficiently leverage County funds.
Sincerely,
Alexandra Kelepolo Ze
President
Moku 0 Keawe Land Conservancy
