HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0220.002 2024-2026P/ 6( C,0W. 220 Aloha, I am testifying today in support of CFR Resolution 131-25, which holds significant importance for our community. Born and raised in Kealakekua to a family deeply rooted in beekeeping, I have witnessed firsthand the integral role of this industry in shaping our agricultural landscape. Upon exploring the agricultural archives at the Gene Greenweil collection, I discovered a notable absence in the narrative —beekeeping in Hawaii, which commenced in the late 1800s, stands as a vital pillar of our agricultural economy. It's a poignant tale of hardworking Kona farmers and the symbiotic relationship between farmers and ranchers. As the curator of The Kona Beekeeping Legacy Project, I have dedicated myself to documenting and celebrating this essential history over the past nine months. This project isn't just about preserving our heritage; it's about nurturing community pride and ensuring that future generations understand the significance of beekeeping in sustaining our island's ecosystem. The funding allocated through CFR Resolution 131-25 will bolster our efforts in marketing and advertising this project, amplifying its reach and impact. Over the past year, we have diligently managed resources, leveraging volunteer hours and utilizing avenues like social media, local publications, and the Kona Historical Society's platform to promote our cause. With additional support, we aim to expand our educational outreach, welcoming more students to experience the exhibit through field trips and developing curriculum materials in multiple languages, including Japanese, to engage our diverse visitor base. These initiatives will not only enrich educational opportunities but also foster a deeper appreciation for Kona's agricultural heritage among both locals and tourists alike. Investing in The Kona Beekeeping Legacy Project under CFR Resolution 131-25 is an investment in cultural preservation, sustainable agriculture, and community education. I urge your support to ensure this project continues to thrive and inspire for years to come. Mahalo for your time and consideration. Leandra Rouse
