Upolu Point, currently on the PONC acquisition list, is the northern most place where the Ala Kahakai NHT begins/ends. Places and sites at or adjacent to this property hold high historic, scenic, and current public use values. 2. The trail's Comprehensive Management Plan (CMP), based on substantial community input, calls for descendant-led, community-based management of associated trail segments to enhance ancestral connections and perpetuate traditional trail stewardship and practices in a manner that is inclusive of all members of the community. 3. Ala Kahakai NHT remains committed to and has been engaged with numerous communities within West Hawaii's shoreline's 175-mile corridor from Upolu to South Point through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in trail management capacity building, supporting conservation land acquisition efforts, and in trail restoration projects and protection initiatives. 4. Ala Kahakai NHT is a signatory of 10-year MOU with both relevant State and County Departments to work in partnership on the implementation of the CMP and to continue to commit to share our resources and information with State and County departments to fulfill their missions on public access initiatives and land use processes. Lastly,we have been working closely with the North Kohala community on all the above. Within this context, we are familiar with Maya Goodoni's knowledge, skills, abilities and dedication to community efforts to preserve open space and on building community-based management capacity on lands acquired by PONC and via other public and private land protection programs. As such, we highly recommend Mayor Alameda's nomination of Ms. Goodoni to serve on the PONC Commission. Mahalo a nui loa for all you do in service to our communities, lands and ecosystems.
