Included among those properties prioritized by the Public Access, Open Space and Natural Resources Commission (PONC) is coastal land that encompasses Upolu Point, the northern tip of our island. It is sandwiched between Upolu Airport and state land. The area has been in use by our family since I can remember-early 40's for gathering opihi and limu kohu, fishing for moi, ulua, u'u, and other fish. Many fond memories for me spending time as a kid with my uncles fishing at night. Then growing up, spearfishing with friends in the area. This is an important area not for only my family but also many Kohala families, especially for those who grew up in nearby Hoea. The North Kohala community has worked hard for 50 years to protect the open nature of our coast. It clearly deserves protection from private development as a legacy for future generations. I also would like to express my support for Mayor Kimo Alameda's nomination of Maya Goodoni to the PONC commission. Born and raised in North Kohala, she has the education, talent and dedication for preserving important lands in our county. Mahalo, Joseph Carvalho Halaula, North Kohala Comm. • l Ref.To: 1 Ref.
