1 I am writing in strong support of Resolution 167-25,introduced by Councilmember Michelle
Galimba,which would provide funding for "The Kona Beekeeper Legacy Project" multimedia
museum exhibit at Kona Historical Society.
As the daughter of Kona beekeepers,I have dedicated the past year to preserving and sharing an
important but often overlooked chapter of our island's agricultural history.Serving as the
project's historian,curator,and documentary director,I've worked to create an engaging exhibit
that honors the hardworking farmers and ranchers who form the backbone of our Kona
community.
The proposed museum exhibit at Kona Historical Society will include:
• A professional multimedia installation with historical photographs and artifacts
• A live observation hive allowing visitors to safely view honeybees at work
• An original 10-minute documentary capturing oral histories and beekeeping practices
• Educational materials designed for school groups and community engagement
This free exhibit,scheduled to run from April through July 2025,will provide our community
with access to their own history while building "Kona Pride" in our agricultural heritage.We
have already scheduled visits for over 300 students,ensuring this knowledge is passed to the next
generation of potential farmers and agricultural stewards.
The funding provided through Resolution 167-25 will specifically support:
• Installation materials and maintenance of the exhibit at Kona Historical Society
• Marketing efforts to reach community members,student groups,and island visitors
• Maintenance of the live observation hive throughout the four-month exhibition
• Development of educational materials for various age groups
Beyond the four-month exhibit,all research materials,oral history,and the documentary will be
permanently archived at the Kona Historical Society's Gene Greenwell Library,becoming a
lasting resource for researchers,students,and community members.
This project tells a story of Kona agriculture that many people—even long-time residents—don't
know.By supporting Resolution 167-25,you will help preserve our agricultural heritage,educate
our keiki,and celebrate the contributions of beekeepers and farmers who have shaped our island
community.
