REPORT OF THE
COMMITTEE ON FINANCE
Re: Comm. No. 289/Res. No. 180-25
Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 180-25, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 180-25, transmitted by Finance Director Diane Nakagawa via Communication
No. 289, dated May 2, 2025, authorizes the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the University of
Hawaii Office of Research Services.
This resolution allows the County to provide a $14,805 grant to the College of Tropical Agriculture
and Human Resources to support its Master Food Volunteer Program.
Research and Development Food Access Coordinator Sarah Freeman, Deputy Director Dennis Lin,
University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources Assistant Extension Agent
Marielle Hampton were present.
Ms. Freeman provided background on the resolution, and Ms. Hampton shared on their collaborations in
the community, their programs and funding sources.
Committee Member Ashley L. Kierkiewicz commented in support of this measure.
Committee Member Dennis "Fresh" Onishi suggested a collaboration with Kokua Harvest and the Food
Basket and urged them to reach out to these organizations. Mr. Lin explained that the department has
funded both organizations before.
Committee Member Holeka Goro Inaba expressed concerns regarding some of the language in the
resolution as they may be conflicting and requested a review from all departments.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 180-25, and
recommends its adoption.
