PHONE: 974-4888 FAX' 974-4880 PRINCIPAL July 21, 2000 TO: James Arakaki, County Council Chairperson FROM: Patricia Nekoba, Pr a Waiakea High Schoo RE: Relating to granting federal funds to Hawaii County Police Department for eradication of marijuana Thank you for the opportunity to express my support of the bill to grant funds to Hawaii County Police Department for the eradication, of marijuana. Certainly continued efforts with as much resources as can be mustered must make some inroads into the problem of illegal drug protection, use and sales on this island. As a citizen, a parent, and a school administrator, I cannot emphasize more strongly my commitment to support drug education, drug abuse awareness, and the impact that use of illegal substances have on the long term effect on peoples' lives. The schools are doing their best to educate youth and parents. Our communities must also take responsibility to do their part. The police departments' efforts to seek additional funding is critical to curb drug sales and use that spills onto school campuses. However, illegal drugs are not being produced or grown on our campuses with our knowledge or blessings. Hence, the source of drugs is in our own communities. It is no secret the Big Island as well as the state has pockets of illegal drug infestation. Our communities are suffering. In the long term, with succeeding generations, we will be supported not only young addicts (drug babies) but we will be supporting them as adults through tax dollars. The circle must be broken. Every small act to prevent drug abuse and/or addiction saves one or two more lives, who may make a difference in our communities as leaders and exemplars. I strongly urge others to look beyond our immediate fears and work towards renewing stronger, resilient communities through support of this bill. Comm. No * 7z/,?. File No.ICW- Ref. To: ~~Cd uh Ref.
