Subject: Bill 47 / Short term rental Amendment testimony
Hawaii County Council members,
As a Kailua Kona resident who is raising a family in a house that my wife and I worked and saved for a
decade to buy, I would like to submit our testimony on this matter. We currently host a short term rental
in our downstairs ohana which assists us greatly in paying our mortgage and being able to afford to
continue living in Hawaii. I believe this county got things right when we limited out of state and "non
hosted" rentals from being allowed. This solved the problem of investors buying up neighborhoods and
turning them into vacation rentals while leaving less options for locals. Allowing resident home owners to
continue renting a portion of their homes while still occupying the house was a great move that allowed
many families to continue to supplement their income and stay in their homes.
I understand if the council wants to implement a permitting process now for this to continue, but I would
urge you to not make it too expensive or burdensome for the many folks in our situation. Please don't
regulate away another option for local families to earn supplemental income and continue living in our
expensive state.
Regards,
c c
