No on Bill 47
Aloha Hawaii county council representatives,
I'm writingto askyou to vote no on Bill47. Like previous bills that have been introduced targeting
vacation rentals, it will hurt the permanent residents on the island the most. Many short term vacation
rental owners are struggling to get by and have already been crippled by high taxes and fees. Many can't
afford their mortgage without receiving income from their short-term rental on the side. If we go into a
recession, as some economists think may happen in the near future, many residents will struggle even
more. It's the wrong time to be discussing bills like this.
Removing barriers to the permitting process will do more to facilitate building, which will have a large
impact on supply of homes available (and housing affordability in turn). This is where the focus of the
council should be. Eliminating vacation rentals (or taking steps toward that end) will have a very minor
impact on affordability and is only a short-term band -aid.
First things first. If we want to make housing more affordable, let's do the things that will have the biggest
Long-term impact and removing barriers to building is at the top of that list.
