Regarding: resolution 140-25 a proposed award of $50,000 to Aloha Animal Alliance for a
pilot project of TNRM
Friends of Lili' uokalani Gardens are concerned by the growing abandoned cat colonies on
the Waiakea peninsula, particularly in Lili' uokalani Gardens.
We favor programs that 1) enforce current laws against abandoning animals as well as
enforcement of laws against feeding cats in LILF uokalani Gardens, and 2) provide for the
health of abandoned animals, and 3) provide for relocating abandoned animals away from
critical habitats.
While we are in favor of the trap, medically treat, and neuter parts of the proposed program,
we are vigorously opposed to re-releasing abandoned cats in Lili' uokalani Gardens. The
public health concerns of such an action are many in this large and heavily used public
park. We have discussed them at length with County park personnel, elected officials,
endangered species protectors, and the Aloha Animal Alliance.
If the proposal can be amended, we would suggest language prohibiting release of
abandoned cats back into the critical habitat of Lili' uokalani Gardens. The endangered
species of nene geese, green sea turtles, and monk seals must be protected. Our human
population also does not need the danger posed by these abandoned cats.
