I strongly urge you to oppose Resolution 140-25, which proposes county funding for the Aloha Animal
Alliance's Trap -Neuter -Return -Manage (TNRM) program. As a concerned resident, I believe this approach fails
to protect Hawai`i's endangered native species, including the nene, from the ongoing threats posed by feral
cats.
TNRM is ineffective at reducing feral cat populations, especially in open environments like ours where
abandonment and migration continue. Studies show that even under ideal conditions, TNRM takes decades to
make a difference —and that's only if no new cats are introduced. Meanwhile, feral cats remain a deadly
threat to native wildlife, preying on endangered birds and spreading diseases like toxoplasmosis, which is
lethal to nene, monk seals, and humans.
I've personally seen the risks at feeding locations like Queen's Marketplace and Anaeho`omalu Beach;where
feral cats and mongooses congregate, putting both wildlife and people in danger. Tourists interact with these
animals, unaware of the disease risks, and native species like nene are drawn to these sites, increasing their
exposure to predation and vehicle collisions.
Instead of funding TNRM, we need science -based solutions that prioritize permanent removal, stricter pet
ownership laws, and enclosed sanctuaries. Protecting Hawai'i's unique biodiversity requires decisive action —
not programs that perpetuate harm. Please vote no on Resolution 140-25 and support policies that truly
safeguard our native wildlife.
