Dear Council Members,
I strongly urge you to oppose Resolution 140-25, which proposes funding for Trap -Neuter -Return -Manage
(TNRM) programs in Hawaii County. As someone deeply concerned about the survival of our native
wildlife; I cannot support policies that perpetuate harm to endangered species like the nene and
seabirds.
Feral cats are a proven threat to Hawai`i's fragile ecosystems. I've personalty witnessed cats killing
birds —not out of necessity, but instinct —and their unchecked populations create hazards for both
wildlife and people. On the Big Island, feral cats are everywhere, often struck by cars, endangering
drivers and themselves.
TNRM does not work. Studies show it takes decades to reduce cat populations —if abandonment stops
entirely, which it doesn't. Meanwhile, feeding stations attract nene, exposing them to deadly diseases
like toxoplasmosis and increasing predation risks. These programs ignore the root problem:
irresponsible pet ownership and lack of enforcement.
We need solutions that actually protect our native species, such as trap -neuter -adopt programs, stricter
spay/neuter laws, and enclosed sanctuaries. Taxpayer dollars should fund strategies with measurable
results, not failed experiments that endanger wildlife. Obviously trapping and euthanizing would be the
most effective and humane option, if people are opposed to the next best option would be to trap and
keep these cats inside of their homes away from causing needless harm to the wildlife.
Please reject Resolution 140-25 and prioritize science -based policies that safeguard Hawai`Ps unique
biodiversity. Our endangered species cannot afford more delays.
