I strongly urge you to oppose Resolution 140-25, which proposes funding for Trap -Neuter -Return -Manage
(TNRM) programs for feral cats in Hawaii County. As someone deeply concerned about the survival of
our native wildlife, I cannot support policies that perpetuate harm to endangered species like the nene.
TNRM has been proven ineffective in Hawaii —population modeling shows it takes decades to reduce
feral cat numbers, and only if no new cats are abandoned. Meanwhile, these cats continue to prey on
native birds, spread deadly diseases like toxoplasmosis, and disrupt fragile ecosystems. I've witnessed
this firsthand: a single feral cat in my neighborhood has decimated local bird populations, making it
unsafe to even put out feeders for native species.
The stakes are too high to rely on failed methods. Feral cats are invasive predators with no place in
Hawai`i's delicate environment. Instead of funding TNRM, we need stronger enforcement of pet
abandonment laws, expanded trap -neuter -adopt programs, and enclosed sanctuaries —solutions that
actually reduce cat populations while protecting wildlife.
Hawai`i's biodiversity is irreplaceable. Please reject Resolution 140-25 and prioritize science -based
strategies that safeguard our native species. Mahalo for your commitment to protecting our islands'
natural heritage.
