Subject: Amendment to Bill No. 32, Draft 2
Aloha,
My husband and I are writing in support of Communication 159.41 to amend Bill No. 32, Draft 2.
We have been residents of Waikoloa Village since 2008. We recall a County plan in 2008 stating that a secondary road
out of the Village was a very high priority to prevent loss of life in the event of wildfire. It is now 2025 and a secondary
arterial road is an URGENT priority and it's time to take steps to make that road a reality.
We remember when high winds and dry conditions forced evacuation of the Village. It took nearly an hour for some of
our neighbors to make it from our north end of the Village to Waikoloa Road. We now have several new developments
finished or under construction beyond where we live. There will be many more vehicles trying to leave the Village in an
emergency. My husband and I are both nervous when we have high wind warnings and dry conditions. We can only
prepare so much and it is very stressful.
We know budgets are tight and there are many projects that need funding. However it is imperative to fund the
engineering design needed to get the long process of completing an exit road started. We need to prevent a wildfire
disaster, rather than letting a disaster happen and then trying to deal with the loss of lives and properties after the
disaster occurs, as recently happened in Lahaina.
Please vote yes to Councilman James Hustace's amendment to Bill no. 32 Draft 2 and fund engineering to begin the
process of building a secondary arterial road out the Village.
