On behalf of Safe Tech Hawaii, a grassroots coalition of concerned
residents, we are askingyoLWfull--
support of Bill 24 as it is written.
Ti
For our safety and welfare, we desperately need the 600 foot setback from residences and schools to
protect from tower encroachments.
People want connectivity but no one wants a tower in their backyard! The setback is necessary to
protect the property values, safety and quality of life of the people. Also to protect the scenic, historical,
natural, man-made, and cultural resources of the island.
The bill allows for this but does not compromise public safety, as telecom facilities - including
police, fire and ambulance - are exempt from the setback, and other, requirements.
This Bill has been through the wringer. It was the second submission of two competing Bills put forth on
the same legislation, which is unprecedented.
The first Bill was supported by the community and was authored by an elected Council Member. The
second Bill was submitted later, was written by the Planning Director, an unelected official, and was
favorable to the telecom industry. Yet the Committee chose the latter and then proceeded to erode what
Little community protections were included in that Bill. We are desperately clinging to what's left,
especially the meager 600 foot setback from residences and schools.
Please help protect us from tower encroachments and adopt this Bill as -is. Without it we, and you, are in
the wild west of wireless. Not safe!
