Subject: Testimony: Support for "Food Security" Budget Line Item
Greetings,
On Thursday, June 5, Hawai`i County Council will decide whether to add a critical new line item, "Food Security", to
the Department of Research and Development's Agricultural Contractual Services budget. This is a vital step in
protecting and strengthening our island's food systems in the face of looming federal and state budget cuts. Council
Member Jenn Kagiwada proposes starting with $2 million in funds that could be used to support The Food Basket,
Malama da Farmer, Resilience Hub Food Distribution, Kokua Harvest, or other similar programs.
Please prioritize food and economic security by supporting the addition of this line item.
