Aloha Council Members,
My name is Brad Bordessa, and I strongly support adding a "Food Security" line item to the Department of
Research and Development's Agricultural Contractual Services budget. I'm an occasional volunteer for
The Food Basket's Kokua Harvest Program.
Services like Kokua Harvest provide vital fresh produce access to many folks on Hawai'i. Gleaning also
reduces waste from our already too -small local agriculture production. By funding programs like Kokua
Harvest, we are getting food off the tree and into homes in need of greater food security.
Until the county and state decides to address the out -of -control cost of living in Hawai'i, local residents
will remain strapped for cash and short of healthy things to eat. With the looming federal budget cuts
affecting grants that many of these programs rely on, we need the county to step up and support our
community's food security and access by funding this line item and others like it.
