Subject: Food Security: in support of amending Bill 31 (draft 3)
Council members:
I am writing in support of amending Bill 31 (draft 3) to include more funding for food security in the
county. Supporting our local programs that feed people is critical at this juncture, especially in light of
potential budget cuts comingfrom the feds.
The food bank benefits directly from monetary funding, of course, but they also benefit from programs
like Kokua Harvest, a gleaning program that harvests and distributes produce that would otherwise rot on
the ground. By supporting programs like this, we prevent food waste and put wholesome food on the
table for residents all over the island without relying so. much on imported food. Supporting Kokua
Harvest and similar programs is a win from every angle.
Thanks for your consideration.
