Subject: Food Security
Dear Council Members,
I am a huge fan as well as a crop donor with The Food Basket's Kokua Harvest Program. This is a brilliant
program that in 2024 alone harvested and distributed 62,759 pounds of produce that would have
otherwise gone to waste on our island. We get a big bang for our buck with this program.
Thus, I am writing today in very strong support of adding a "Food Security" line item to the Department of
Research and Development's Agricultural Contractual Services budget, with an initial allocation of $2
million, to keep programs like this working for us.
Please prioritize food security in this year's budget to help keep our po'e fed with local, healthy foods.
