HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0236.128 2024-2026P / Counci l dill 47 COW. 25� 6/2/25 Dear Council Members, Thank you again for taking the time to read this and giving it your thoughtful reflection and consideration for the third time since May 4th. s3 I OPPOSE BILL 47! � This is what we are asking for: 1. Deferral of Dill 47 until the economic study is released. - 2. Amendments that codify protections, not promises. e 3. A limited -time amnesty for registration and code compliance. 4. Clear interdepartmental guidance —not just general statements from Council. PLEASE WAIT FOR THE ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY TO BE FINISHED BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO WRITE A NEW BILL!! If the study is finished, please make it available to everyone in the county to view. How can any of us believe a word you say? You can't even keep your word on waiting for the economic impact study before moving forward on another rental bill. How can you commit to keeping your word on the promises you have attached to this bill? It seems extremely dangerous to pass a bill that will put more people out of work and potentially on the street. Moving forward without the study and information it will give you shows your lack of interest in caring about the people you are supposed to serve. Shame on you if you pass this bill. WHY ARE YOU IGNORING EVERYTHING THE LEEWARD PLANNING COMMISSION HAS SAID ABOUT BILL 121 WHICH IS EXTREMELY SIMILAR TO BILL 47??? Again, writing this bill or any bill similar without the economic impact study is irresponsible. It shows a true lack of care and consideration to all of us who would lose our businesses if a bill like this passes. c7 19 Comm. W-4 Ref. To: Ref. DQI JUG 0025 As usual, the lack of q and a with the public is suspicious and clear that the authors have no interest in how to actually fix the issue or care how it will affect people in their districts. They are clearly trying to please a different boss and not the people of Hawaii County. This bill is dangerous and gives the county freedom to shut renters down for any reason and we all know the authors of this bill will not stop rewriting the rules? The only people trying to shut down businesses right now are people who are not paying attention and have laser focus on killing small businesses for personal gain. The gall that it takes to put this bill forward right now is astounding. There is a complete lack and awareness of current events and the effects it will have on the people that live on the Big Island. ,It is disgusting that this would be attempted before the final economic impact study has been finished and revealed to the public. Are you keeping it secret? Will you ever release it to the public? The lack of care or compassion is shocking as the authors of this bill continue to put people through this over and over again as the economy is worsening. The authors need to educate themselves with how people on the island actually live! Not all of us make $80-$90,000 a year. Trying to shut down small businesses has become this author's hobby. Please read the room and stop pandering to your future employers or whomever you are pushing this bill so hard for. I would not be surprised if the authors of this bill are working for the hotel industry or the likes of it when their terms are over, which will not be soon enough for all of us. You have no idea how dangerous it is releasing this bill on the cusp of so many potentially losing healthcare and social security, you will literally be putting people on the street, for what? More money? More control? I would love for you to have more compassion and thought when writing bills for such delicate situations. You may be taking away the only income elderly hosts have, does that make you feel powerful? You might be taking food or damaging the future for children, do you care? To me, the authors do not. They have a line they need to hit and that is all that matters to them at whatever cost. They are on a mission to check this off of their list and please the higher ups, not the people they are supposed to and paid to represent. Shame on you! highly oppose Bill 47! This bill is extremely tone deaf and again, overreaching. Prices in general are going up and people are not traveling as much to the Big Island. Leave it to the authors of this bill to hit us all when we're down, they really don't quit trying to hurt the people of Hawaii. Do you really expect to take more money from people that are paying almost 20% in taxes to you already with the threat of losing their property and charging high registration fees? Why don't you work on problems like getting rid of food deserts on our island? Why don't you work on productive projects instead of trying to squeeze blood from a stone? Not only are we all getting less bookings from guests abroad due to the current political climate, we are now being gouged for fees and threats of liens on our properties. Soon enough there will be no vacationers but we will still have to pay these fees and be threatened with liens on our properties if fines are not paid. Again, I oppose Bill 47 and I oppose the constant threats to rental owners and do not trust that the authors won't try to slip in more deceptive additions to this bill as it goes along!
