Aloha, esteemed Council Members, Thank you for your full support of HISS and approval of Resolution 145-25 .w. for Science equipment for participants in May. For our 4-day event we are also asking for additional funds for transportation through Resolution 191-25- Council Member Ashley Klerkiewica is proposing this for us. Illy name Is Louis Perroy, and I'm currently the Student Board President of the Hawaii International Science Experience (HISS). Our student team has experienced valuable programs that inspire and connect students from across the world, promotes educational opportunities and significantly improves outcomes for those who participate. I believe Hawaii Island's schools are In need of a program like this, one that bridges the gap between our exceptional scientific and cultural opportunities and our high school students who could benefit directly from there. I am writing to you to ask for your approval of Grant 191-25 to help inspire STEM learning and careers and boost student confidence in international collaborations. This annual program will leave countless students feeling excited about the future, and in particular, excited about their potential future in Hawaii. This programs largely depends an community support and grants such as this one, but with your support, I remain hopeful that we will be able to serve and support our island's youth, expanding and growing into the future. I've realized how much of our cultural knowledge already connects with science --whether it's navigation, farming, or the environment. I want to help show students that science isn't something far away or only found in labs —it's something we can do right here at Dome, and something that can help strengthen and preserve our culture too_ At the saute time, I believe it's just as important to share the science within our culture with others around the world —to show that Hawaiian knowledge has real value in global conversations about science, sustainability, and innovation. As Hawaiians, it's important that we do what we can to keep our culture alive and growing. One way to do that is by showing students that science isn't separate from our culture —it can actually be a powerful part of it." Benjamin Tang, Parker School Senior - Providing an Inspiring Pathway "As a student who has grown up in Honoka'a, I still clearly remember the countless nights I spent in my freshman year scrounging the internet to find any STEM offerings in my local community, only to walk away empty-handed. However, after going through high school and interning at numerous local startups, I've realized that Hawai'i Island doesn't lacy a Vibrant STEM industry- Rather, there's no easy pathway for students to get involved. I believe that through HISS, we can provide a clear and inspiring gateway for students to access these opportunities. By connecting local keik'i with both international peers and the innovative science and tech work happening here on Hawaii Island, RISE helps to bridge the gap between potential and opportunity. There is much our island offers in terms of STEM and opportunities for youth that no other place in the world offers I hope that through RISE we can inspire our students to become more involved in the local community, realize the opportunities right in their backyards, and teach them to seek NEW knowledge and growth through interactions with diverse, international guests.
