A RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING THE EIGHTIETH ANNIVERSARIES OF THE BOMBINGS OF HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI AND REAFFIRMING A COMMITMENT TO PEACE.
WHEREAS, on August 6 and 9, 1945, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan were devastated by the first—and only—use of atomic bombs during war—events whose destruction and human
suffering resonate as an enduring warning about the catastrophic impact of nuclear warfare; and
WHEREAS, the eightieth anniversaries of these bombings mark a solemn milestone and a moment for collective remembrance of the lives lost, wounded, and forever altered; and
WHEREAS, this Council honors the memory of all victims and acknowledges the intergenerational trauma endured by survivors and their families; and
WHEREAS, Resolution No. 449-24, Draft 3, adopted by this body on March 20, 2024, recognized the importance of peace, diplomacy, disarmament, and the importance of resolving conflicts
and disputes with Aloha; and
WHEREAS, Resolution No. 317-23, adopted by this body on November 15, 2023, authorized the Mayor to establish a Sister City relationship between the County of Hawai‘i and Hatsukaichi,
a city in Hiroshima Prefecture; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I that the County hereby solemnly acknowledges and commemorates the eightieth anniversaries of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima
and Nagasaki by reaffirming its commitment to championing peace, nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and the resolution of conflict through diplomacy and mutual respect.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County pledges to continue to support public education, cultural exchange, and community remembrance events in peacebuilding initiatives.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County urges citizens and institutions to reflect on the lessons of 1945, recommit to tolerance, justice, and reconciliation, and reject the use and proliferation
of nuclear weapons.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this resolution to the Honorable C. Kimo Alameda, Mayor of the County of Hawai‘i; Malia Louis, Protocol Officer;
Kaʻiu Kimura, President of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Hawai‘i; Arnold T. Hiura, President of the Hawai‘i Japanese Center; and Lincoln Ashida, President of the East
Hawaiʻi Hiroshima Kenjin Kai.
