I live in Hilo during the weekdays and stay in Ka`u on the weekends to help my Papa on our ranch. I am writing to speak up for our `aina, our kupuna, and our future. I am very sad and disappointed about the geothermal projects being planned for Ka`u and Hawaii Island. It is wrong, and it will hurt my Tutu Pele. When people drill into the earth, they are stealing her mana. That is sacred. It will also destroy our `aina — our clean air, our water, our food, our animals, our plants, and the ecosystem that we need to survive. It will disrespect our kupuna and our iwi at Kalae, and the legacy they left for us. I was taught that the `aina is the people, and the people are the `aina. Even though I am only 11 years old, I understand this. I know that my future is being sold for money and greed, and that's not pono. I want to grow up in the beautiful, sacred place my ancestors left for me, and I want to pass it down to my children too. Please do the right thing and say no to geothermal in Ka`u.
