Subject: Opposition to Geothermal Exploration or Implementation on DHHL, Kalae (South
Point) Ka'u Hawaii.
Aloha County Council
My Name is Pernell Hanoa, I'm a beneficiary of a 25- acre parcel located on DHHL in Kalae,
Ka'u. I'm opposed to DHHL's joint venture in doing geothermal exploration on DHHL for the
following reason.
DHHL still has not fulfilled its obligation to supply water to myself and many other
beneficiaries that have been on our 25-acre parcels at Kalae for years. My Ohana along with
Kupuna Jesse Ke and her ohana did the ceremonial"Pikai" for the new Kalae water tank.
The tank has been completed and is full of water but, no one can access it. Senator
Kanuha, who was present at the ceremony told us that he had secured the funding to have
the water distribution lines and meters installed to each parcel. That still has not been
done. Instead DHHL has proposed installing a spigot at the new tank location and we can
haul water to our parcels? Does anyone of you or DHHL leadership haul water to your
homes? Now we are going to redirect resources to desecrate our Aina for what? Or
beneficiaries are suffering because we have no access to water. We cannot even hook up
to the county water line. Instead, we are left to transport water with our vehicles on
unimproved roads just so we can use our aina. This takes a toll on our vehicles, and our
ohana. Fulfill your obligation and get us water first before worrying about desecrating Tutu
Pete in Ka'u!
