I write in strong support of Bill 51, which seeks to prohibit the feeding of feral animals on County of
Hawaii property. As someone deeply concerned about protecting our endangered native
species,
I
believe this bill is a critical step toward preserving Hawai`i's unique ecosystems.
The threat feral cats pose to our native wildlife cannot be overstated. While I haven't personally
witnessed impacts, the scientific evidence is clear - these invasive predators decimate native bird
populations and spread deadly diseases like toxoplasmosis. The tragic death of a nene goslingfrom this
parasite earlier this year demonstrates the real consequences of allowing feral cat feeding to continue
unchecked.
What concerns me most is the irreversible damage being done to species found nowhere else in the
world. Our native birds and plants evolved without mammalian predators, making them particularly
vulnerable. Every day we allow feral cats to roam and be fed on public lands is another day closer to
extinction for these irreplaceable species.
Some well-meaning individuals may suggest compromise solutions, but we must remember that half -
measures won't save our native wildlife. Feeding bans must be comprehensive to be effective. The
science is clear that maintaining any feral cat populations, even through managed feeding, continues the
cycle of harm to our native ecosystems.
Bill 51 represents the kind of decisive action we need to protect what makes Hawaii special. I urge you to
pass this important legislation without amendments that would weaken its effectiveness. Our native
species don't have time for compromises - they need protection now.
