Bill 51
I have seen many Facebook posts encouraging people to oppose Bill 51. 1 would like to go on the record
that I SUPPORT Bill 51. Feral cats are a danger and nuisance to responsible cat owners. I do not want
fed cat colonies near my home in Volcano to bring in diseases and cats that would fight and attack my
household cats and attack my chickens. This concern is only minor compared to the damage these cats
cause to the local indigenous wildlife.
The people that support the cat colonies and feed feral cats seem to think this prevents them from killing
the local birds. It does not. Hawaii's indigenous bird population faces so many threats. We do not need
to add feral cats.
The supporters of cat colonies seem to think it would be cruel to stop feeding the cats and let them
starve. I personally would support the euthanization of all feral cats. I understand the supporters of the
cat colonies say they are "animal lovers". I say they are "cat lovers" and care nothing about the hundreds
of birds these cats kill outright, not to mention the other animals like the Hawaiian monk seals that are
susceptible to the toxoplasmosis carried by feral cats.
I also understand the real issue. is not the feral cats themselves but also the irresponsible pet owners
who dump their animals. In my opinion cat colonies encourage people to dump unwanted animals
because the irresponsible owners feel the cats will be cared for there.
As stated before, I am a cat owner. I am also an educated individual who has a job. I am a public
school teacher. Please, have this testimonial read and Pass Bill 51.
