To Hawaii County Council Members re: Bill 51
I am writing to strongly oppose Bill 51 which would make it illegal to feed feral cats on county land.
This is an inhumane proposal which would exacerbate, not effectively address, the problem of feral
cats on our island. Starving the cats would not only be cruel, but would put native birds at higher risk
from cats who would not have another food source. We need more spay & neuter programs and
more vigorous messaging to the community about how critical responsible pet care is & the problems
that ensue when people don't spay or neuter the animals that come into their care.
It would actually be more humane to euthanize the cats (I am NOT recommending this response!),
than to starve them. Criminalizing feeding and the volunteers who are working so hard to care for and
address the stray cat population is most certainly not an appropriate response to the problem.
Please vote NO to Bill 51.
