We, the undersigned, are parents or family members of children attending Ernest B. de Silva Elementary
School in the Ainako neighborhood of Hilo.
We believe there are substantial traffic safety issues involving both speeding and repeated failures to honor
established cross walks that place our youngsters at undue risk
The problems appear to have gradually escalated in recent time. Some parents and grandparents now
decline to allow their children to walk to school, adding to the congestion at the entry and exist. Others have
chosen to accompany their youngsters to avert what many believe could be dire consequences.
We ask Hawaii County officials to renew enforcing existing traffic laws in the area and to conduct periodic
monitoring to ensure there is some reasonable level of driver compliance in recognizing crosswalks, particularly
the one at Ainako Avenue and Manulele Street intersection.
