The bombings of August 6 and 9, 1945, caused the deaths of over 200,000 people and left survivors carrying lasting trauma. The hibakusha have become global voices for peace, reminding us of the catastrophic cost of nuclear war. This resolution calls us to remember and recommit to nonviolence in a time when nuclear tensions are again rising. Hawai`i's location and diverse community give it a unique voice in championing diplomacy over destruction. By maintaining our Sister City relationship with Hatsukaichi, and through continued education and cultural exchange, we empower future generations to choose dialogue and peace. I urge you to pass this resolution and continue Hawaii County's leadership in peacebuilding and justice. Mahalo for your consideration.
