My name is Susan Elizabeth and I am writing in STRONG OPPOSITION to Bill 51.
I have been feeding cats at the park near Banyan Drive every morning for the past eight years. I consider
them my babies. Some of them even have names and come when I call. You may call them "feral," but I
see them as misunderstood angels sent here for healing. If Hawaii is really about aloha, how can you
criminalize compassion?
I moved here from California in 2007 because I felt spiritually called to this island. I've always felt a deep
connection to Pele and the sacred mana of this land. I believe we are all stewards of the `aina—yes, even
the haole ones like me who were brave enough to follow our hearts and settle here.
This bill is nothing more than an attack on the kindness and kuleana that we, the feeders, have
shouldered while the County did NOTHING for years. Without us, there would be piles of starving cats
and crying kittens all over the beaches and resorts. If you cared so much about the "Nay -Nays," maybe
you should relocate them to a sanctuary somewhere safe. These birds are beautiful, yes, but they're not
the only lives that matter.
And don't even try to tell me this is about health. If people are worried about disease, maybe stop
bringingyour kids to the park. Or wear shoes and wash your hands.
I urge the Council to REJECT this cold-hearted bill that goes against the very spirit of community care.
Stop trying to control nature and let those of us who really know the land (and the animals) do what we've
always done.
