TESTIMONY IN SUPPORT OF KOHALA CARES
Dear Members of the Hawaii County Council
I, Annalene Williams, hereby submit testimony, as an individual,, in support of funding for Kohala
Cares, a weekly food distribution program in North Kohala.
Kohala Cares was founded by former Hawi restaurant owner Peter Pomeranze, who recognized a
community need in North Kohala during the COVID-19 lockdown. After his restaurant closed during
COVID-19 restrictions, Peter began accepting community donations to distribute food amid
uncertain times. Kohala Cares distributes groceries to food -insecure individuals every week in the
parking lot of St. Augustine's Church.
Food insecurity continues to be a problem in Hawaii.

According to the United States Household Food Security Survey Module, nearly one in three a c'ca
households in Hawaii face food insecurity.=,
