WHEREAS, the Zonta Club of Hilo Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower women and girls through public service and advocacy; and WHEREAS, the Zonta Club of Hilo Foundation is requesting funds for STEM supplies for workshop activities and t-shirts, which will serve a public purpose by benefiting, improving, or promoting the interests of educational concerns and the needs of the poor, youth, the aged, and those with physical or emotional disabilities; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI`I that, in accordance with section 2-139(a)(2)(C) of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4 are hereby transferred to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney to provide a grant to the Zonta Club of Hilo Foundation for the expenses and purposes identified in "Exhibit A," a copy of which is attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference, in the following amount as set forth below: FUND: General AMOUNT OF APPROPRIATION: $2,500 OUT AND FROM: 1010-11-10191 Clerk -Council SVC — Contingency Relief CREDITED TO: 1010-21-27102 Office of the Prosecuting Attorney Prosecuting Attorney OCE 530115 Misc. "Amelia Earhart Girls in Engineering Day" encourages girls grades 4-8 to continue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). The day targets female students from East Hawai' i middle schools and their parents with inspiring curriculum, hands-on activities, and local role models working in STEM careers. Scheduled for January 31, 2026, the free day supports 4-8 graders to pursue STEM throughout middle and high school, then pursue college degrees in STEM. Launched in 2012, each year features a different science theme, and attendees participate in interactive science projects. Instrumental in the program's success are dedicated science educators and students at Waiakea High School. Women professionals in STEM fields speak to and encourage the girls to stay on a STEM pathway. "Amelia Earhart Day was a great opportunity for me to engage young women with an interest in science, and for them to learn more about what a chemist actually does," said Natalie Crist, UH-Hilo Chemistry Instructor. * 53.501(c)(3) Mission Statement Empower women and girls though public service and advocacy. * 54.
