WHEREAS, Kohala Heritage Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is dedicated to collecting, preserving, promoting, and celebrating the diverse history of North Kohala; and WHEREAS, Kohala Heritage Center is requesting funds for expenses related to its Media Center and Reading Corner for furniture and lighting equipment, which will serve a public purpose by benefiting, improving, or promoting culture and the arts, educational concerns, and public health and welfare of the people and the environment; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI`I that, in accordance with section 2-13 9(a)(2)(C) of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), Contingency Relief funds from Council District 9 are hereby transferred to the Department of Research and Development to provide a grant to Kohala Heritage Center for the expenses and purposes identified in "Exhibit A," a copy of which is attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference, in the following amount as set forth below: FUND: General AMOUNT OF APPROPRIATION: $3,500 OUT AND FROM: 1010-11-10191 Clerk -Council SVC —Contingency Relief $3,500 CREDITED TO: 1010-11-16160 Department of Research and Development $35500 Tourism Promotion 530115 Misc. The Kohala Heritage Center (KHC) was envisioned by a group of caring community members who have spent many years working toward the restoration of the historic Bond Memorial Library building. The KHC serves as a repository for artifacts,, documents,, photos,, books, art, and cultural exhibits, and provides a gathering space for local nonprofits,, school groups,, and community members. The project funded by this grant will enhance KHC"s media lab and reading corner. The media lab will focus on communications,, provide state-of-the-art training for youth and all interested residents to document Kohala's' heritage,, record "talk story" sessions,, and collect ""Living Treasures,'° for the archive and media presentations. The reading corner features donated books on Hawaiian history, legends, royal families, la'au lapaau (medicinal plants), native flora, ghost stories, and ethnic diversity, with grant funds supporting the addition of seating to enhance visitor comfort. KHC engages both kupuna and youth in creating programming., exhibits, and guides., and hosts talks, workshops, and cultural events.
