CONFLICT OF INTEREST
Dear Chairman James Arakaki and Councilmembers:
-N lay we please urge YOUR FULL SUPPORT of these two Bills which N, i(I- be
introduced by Councilmember Julie Jacobson on the agenda for the Fin i:nce
Committee 6n Tuesday, July 25th (10:30AM).
Bill 264 would bar conmcilmembers from voting on disc etionarv matte;: ichich
give direct financial benefits to their campaign donors who have given 100 or
more in an election cycle.
Bill 265 would make it illegal for elected count- officials or their immed i, ;e
family members to have $1000 or more in business interests in anv corip.: 'v that
does business with the County of Hawaii.
lVlule my support of these two Bills in no way implies criticism of any airrent
individual member of the Conuncil, in the light of past publicih. I feel t
imperative that voters are able to see unequivocally that decisions are nnade
solely on the benefits of legislation to the communlt as a whole. The,, 'j:lls
would avoid any individual member having to defend their integrih
Conflicts of interest constitute a very slippery slope. Distinct and clear l units,
that are easily enforceable, will make a difference in the way busine>s i;.
