Re: Legislation pertaining to conflicts of interest L":
My name is John L Tarson and I live in the Iialopa area on the Hamakua, c I
have read about legislation that was preciously introduced to the Council has
not been acted upon relating to conflicts of interest.
It is my understanding that at the Finance Committee meeting on this Tuest7a.i .Talc
25, 2000 new bills ninnbered 264 and 265 will be before the committee. 1 , each
of you to rote in favor of these bills that will give further definition and ta;1r `
methodology relating to conflicts of interest.
It is nn• understanding that Bill 264 would bar council members from voti^=~7 opt
discretionary matters (e.g. rezoning, subdivision project approvals) that ect
financial benefits to their campaign donors who have given 5100 or more
in an election cycle.
It is also my understanding that Bill 265 would make it illegal for elected r !n ,
officials (Council members and the'Nlayor) or their immediate family mew;ri s to
have $1000 or more in business interests in any compmn that does businccs
with the County of Hawaii.
County government needs to show leadership in this extremely important . hat
sets the standard for integrity in government and will affect all of our lives he
quality of life for future generations.
Please show your leadership and integrity by voting for bills 264 and 265.
Thank you
John L Tarson
