Council Chair and Council members.
I am writing in support of bills 264 and 26=_ To me. its a no-brainer. The county coutcii a responsible for
the protection and responsible development of our island \%Ien campaign donations are ed to dictate
the direction that development takes, tie end up with over development and destruction e f our fragile native
environments. Hatvai'i has more native floral diversity than am Where else in the entire world but we are
loosing that diversity that took millions of tears to develop. Our plants are going extinct at a rate of 2-3 per
year due to human encroachment and destruction. We have vast areas of fraeile rain forest that is zoned for
agricultural use and lacks an} form of le-al protection. I have thatched as the council has &,•,n zoned
thousands of acres of land with very little regard for the native species that line there Cntil plants can tote.
it is up to US to protect them. The county council pla\s a critical role in approving nett 1 r.'c,ts and
zoning. Those votes must be unbiased and impartial if we are to have any hope of savior ~vhat we have left.
Visitors come to Hawai i to see our native rain forests and beautiful undeveloped beaches not to shop at
Wal-Mart or experience the unique joy of time share condos and strip malls. We must prc t our
environment for future generations or we will find ourselves in the same position Oahu it, finds itself.
spending millions of taxpayers dollars in a futile attempt to recapture "Hawaii It is time 0-.at ire take
strong measures to protect our native em ironments and species and that cannot happen i-.en approval of
projects depends on the almighty dollar- I am not accusing ank one on the council and I c:.. helieve that the
council members trio make the best decisions possible. However. ire are all human and sometimes we
need guidelines to insure that we take the right path.
Sincerely.
