Honorable Hawai'i County Councilmembers, N As an engaged citizen, volunteer, parent and small business owner, I want to express my gratitude for your leadership on the draft General Plan and other matters important to our communities. I was encouraged to see the thoroughness of the plan, and the proactive measures outlined in it. I want to express my support specifically for the well written and appropriately titled section, "Addressing Climate Change for Island -wide Health." No matter what one's view is of human -caused climate change, the policies, objectives and actions in this section are good, common-sense planning that will improve the resiliency of our island communities. I was pleased to see that these planning decisions will be made using science and the best available data. Especially in the face of cuts to federal funding and federal agencies responsible for climate monitoring, Hawai'i State and County government must prioritize and support the collection of local climate data. It is this data that so many rely on to make important decisions about agriculture, fire hazards, emergency response and more. My overarching comments about this section are to: • Keep it largely intact as it provides important context for the policies, objectives and actions which fall under it. • Prioritize and expedite all actions, policies and objectives related to wastewater treatment and reuse. These decisions impact multiple areas, such as environmental health, human health and climate change mitigation and adaptation. All the objectives listed in this section of the plan have merit. However, I suggest the following revision, (underlined) to action 6.c.: • "Provide funding opportunities for LMI communities to implement climate action, including interactive videos and workshops that meet communities where they are, and grant funding to upgrade wastewater systems.'
