Subject: Action Alert: Protect Pohakuloa- Urge Hawaii County Council to Support Resolution
234-25 — HAPA: Hawai'i Alliance for Progressive Action
Aloha Committee Members,
I strongly support this resolution. US Military training at Pohakuloa has already caused serious harm -
burning nearly 20,000 acres, contaminating the land, and threatening endangered species. Pohakuloa,
the whole island itself is more than just dirt and grass. It`s a place that connects us to our kupuna, the
land tells a story of our people. If the military continues to use this land, it will not only destroy the
land but also the people. Beneath this area lies a major aquifer that supplies fresh water to Hawaii
Island, and the military's track record shows they are not equipped to protect it. If the military can't
protect the aquifer, then the people won't have water, and without water we can't grow and provide
food. There is also serious concern about depleted uranium left in the soil, which can become airborne
during exercises and has known health risks. With the uranium polluting the land/air, it will affect the
air we breathe and could possibly affect the way our plants grow. Pohakuloa is a wahi pana- a sacred
place with deep cultural and ecological significance, connecting us to akua, kupuna, and the mo`opuna
to come. Please support this resolution to protect the land, water, and people of Hawaii.
