Subject: Testimony In Strong Support of Resolution 234-25
Aloha Chair Villegas and members of the Policy Commitee on Environmental and Natural Resource
Management,
I support Resolution 234-25.1 agree that the state should ensure the health and safety of Big Island
residents by requesting that the military stop all bombing and'aina destruction at Pohakuloa, reject land
swaps and lease renewals without strict stipulations, and conduct a full Ka Pa'akai Analysis of the area.
The BLNR did not accept Pohakuloa Training Areas Final Environmental Impact Statement back in May
this year. They cited that the archeology inventory was incomplete, that there was a lack of endangered
species data, and that the Cultural Impact Statement was inadequate. For 60+years, the bombing and
Training activities have desecrated the land, the Saddle Region aquifer system, and cultural sites. The
military has been irresponsible and needs to be held accountable.
Mahalo for the opportunity to testify. Even though this work seems impossible sometimes, I think the
approval of this resolution will send a strong message that our Hawai'i County stands with its people.
