Subject: Yes to Resolution 234-25 Opposing Pohakuloa Lease Renewals
To the Members of the Hawaii County Council,
I just learned that Resolution 234-25 opposing Pohakuloa lease renewals and land swaps is coming
before the Council this week on Tuesday 8/19/2025. 1 urge all Council members to support this
resolution. Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll has called for the issues of the 2029 lease expirations to
be resolved in 60 days, adding urgency to take all measures that would protect Hawai' is autonomy to
determine the future of these lands. The Army's history of empty promises regarding stewardship of
the land and culturally respectful partnership with the Hawai is people makes any new statements of
such intent ring hollow. In addition, state law requires an accepted EIS by the Board of Land and
Natural Resources. The Army's submissions for both Pohakuloa and O'ahu's training lands were
rejected for inadequate surveys of biological species, incomplete documentation of cultural resources,
and an absence of the baseline data required to measure the environmental impact of live -fire
training. Please help us to do all we can to prevent our state from being strong-armed into going
against the best interests of our people and environment.
Respectfully Submitted,
Kim Miller
